Business Excellence Awards Criteria

Small Business Award

The Small Business award recognizes a business with 20 or fewer employees, including the owner(s).  The business has been operational and completed five or more fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline, and has demonstrated professional integrity, excellence in customer service, success through innovation and a commitment to the community. Eligible businesses include (but are not limited to) independent businesses, franchise businesses, and corporate businesses.

  1. The business has a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service in the community.
  2. The business, its owner(s), and/or its employee(s) participate and/or support community and industry-related activities.
  3. The business demonstrates product or service diversification to meet changing client needs to position them for continued growth.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in a particular facet of the business such as service, product, marketing, HR, etc.
  5. The business has a robust planning process and keeps their team engaged in achieving the goals of the plan.

Medium Business Award

The Medium Business award recognizes with 21-50 employees, including the owner(s). The business has been operational and completed five or more fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline, and has demonstrated professional integrity, excellence in customer service, success through innovation and a commitment to the community. Eligible businesses include (but are not limited to) independent businesses, franchise businesses, and corporate businesses.

  1. The business has a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service in the community.
  2. The business, its owner(s), and/or its employee(s) participate and/or support community and industry-related activities.
  3. The business demonstrates product or service diversification to meet changing client needs to position them for continued growth.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in a particular facet of the business such as service, product, marketing, HR, etc.
  5. The business has a robust planning process and keeps their team engaged in achieving the goals of the plan.

Large Business Award

The Large Business award recognizes a business with 51+ employees, including the owner(s).  The business has been operational and completed five or more fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline, and has demonstrated professional integrity, excellence in customer service, success through innovation and a commitment to the community. Eligible businesses include (but are not limited to) independent businesses, franchise businesses, and corporate businesses.

  1. The business has a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service in the community.
  2. The business, its owner(s), and/or its employee(s) participate and/or support community and industry-related activities.
  3. The business demonstrates product or service diversification to meet changing client needs to position them for continued growth.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in a particular facet of the business such as service, product, marketing, HR, etc.
  5. The business has a robust planning process and keeps their team engaged in achieving the goals of the plan.

Not-for-Profit Organization Award

This award recognizes a registered not-for-profit organization or professional association which has been operational and has completed at least three fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline. The organization has made an outstanding contribution to the social, cultural, or economic well-being of the Greater Fredericton Area while exhibiting stability, maintaining a good relationship with its members, staff, and volunteers, and demonstrating best business practices. The organization must be a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce at the time of the nomination deadline.

  1. The mission/objective/goals of the not-for-profit organization or professional association reflect a community or industry need.
  2. The not-for-profit organization or professional association has demonstrated growth.
  3. The not-for-profit organization or professional association has a reputation for integrity in its dealings with clients, volunteers, staff, or other individuals/groups and stakeholders.
  4. New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used in order to benefit the not-for-profit organization or professional association and/or its clients, volunteers, members, and stakeholders.
  5. The not-for-profit organization or professional association demonstrates exceptional governance.

Charitable Organization Award

This award recognizes a registered charitable organization which has been operational and has completed at least three fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline. The organization has made an outstanding contribution to the social, cultural, or economic well-being of the Greater Fredericton Area while exhibiting stability, maintaining a good relationship with its staff and volunteers or members, and demonstrating best practices. The organization must be a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce at the time of the nomination deadline.  

  1. The vision/mission/objective/goals of the organization reflect a community need.
  2. The organization has demonstrated growth.
  3. The organization has a reputation for integrity in its dealings with clients, volunteers, staff, members, or other individuals/groups.
  4. New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used in order to benefit the organization and/or its clients/volunteers/members.
  5. The organization demonstrates exceptional governance.
  6. The organization has robust tools in place for recruiting volunteers and maintains a strong and ongoing relationship with these volunteers (if applicable).
  7. The organization has demonstrated consistent success in funding/fundraising.
  8. The organization has previously been recognized for excellence.

Community Impact Award

The award recognizes a business/organization that has made an extraordinary social, cultural, or environmental impact on the Greater Fredericton Area. The business/organization must be a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce at the time of the nomination deadline.

  1. The business’/organization’s corporate culture reflects an emphasis on community involvement and/or volunteerism.
  2. The business/organization partners with or supports not-for-profit organizations, charities, or other community efforts with a financial and/or time commitment.
  3. New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used in order to benefit the community.

New Business Award

The business has been operational and completed one fiscal year and up to five fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline. The business demonstrates professional integrity, excellence in customer service, growth, success through innovation, and a commitment to the community. The business must be a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce at the time of the nomination deadline.

  1. The business is working to establish a reputation for integrity and a high level of customer service.
  2. The business must have sales and have met or exceeded its own financial/growth expectations as described in its business plan.
  3. The business, its owners, and/or its employee(s) participate in and/or support community and industry-related activities.
  4. The business has the potential to scale up.
  5. New and innovative approaches/initiatives are used in order to benefit the business and/or its customers.

Business Leader of the Year Award

This award recognizes an individual who has achieved significant professional success and made outstanding contributions to the community through their leadership in their professional and volunteer work.  This person has succeeded through innovation, risk-taking, and a commitment to the community and by doing so, has inspired others to do the same.  The individual’s professional career should span at least 10 years at the time of the nomination deadline. The nominee’s business / employer must be a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce at the time of the nomination deadline.

  1. The individual has a reputation for integrity and a high level of service in the community above and beyond their paid position spanning their career.
  2. The individual demonstrates leadership through supporting community and/or industry-related activities throughout their career.
  3. The individual has achieved significant professional success in their career.
  4. This individual has had a broad and substantial impact in the community.
  5. This individual has made a diverse array of contributions to the community.

Resilience Award

This award recognizes a business that has been operational for at least five fiscal years at the time of the nomination deadline and has overcome a major change/challenge that was not exclusively financial in nature, and had an impact on the business, within the past ten years. The business must be a member in good standing of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce at the time of the nomination deadline.

  1. The business experienced a major change/challenge within the past 10 years.
  2. The business was growing and/or sustainable before and after the major change/challenge.
  3. New and innovative approaches/initiatives were used in order to overcome the change/challenge faced by the business.

Business Excellence Award's Policy Criteria:

All nominees must: 

  • The company has been in business for the minimum or maximum number of years required for the Business Excellence Award category they have been nominated in; 
  • It has been five years since the company/organization was a winner in the same Business Excellence Award category; and (ex in 2021, they cannot have been a winner in the same category on or since 2016) 
  • It has been two years since the company/organization was a finalist in the same Business Excellence Award category. (ex in 2021, they cannot have been a finalist in 2020 or 2019 in the same category) (Career achievement award does not impact here as it is a personal award not corporate)
