Fredericton, NB — The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce has introduced a new population growth strategy as part of a region-wide initiative coordinated by the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. Built on shared principles adopted by chambers and boards of trade across Atlantic Canada, the strategy features a dual focus: engaging and retaining our domestic population and attracting and supporting newcomers from across Canada and around the world.
The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with the ACC and its pivotal role in organizing chambers throughout the region to adopt these principles and advocate for a comprehensive, regionally tailored approach to population growth and workforce sustainability.
The Fredericton Chamber’s new strategy builds on this foundation, integrating local priorities with the broader Atlantic vision. “Our new strategy reflects the collective vision and commitment of Atlantic Canada’s chamber community,” said Morgan Peters, CEO of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce. “By focusing on both attraction and retention, engaging our local graduates and residents, as well as welcoming newcomers, we can build a stronger, more sustainable future for Fredericton and the entire region. We need federal and provincial policies that reflect our regional realities and support long-term community and economic development. Our new strategy is designed to ensure that both newcomers and domestic graduates have every opportunity to build their lives and careers here in Atlantic Canada.”
Recommendations: Strategic Initiatives to Support Population Growth (Dual-Focus Strategy)
- Atlantic Graduate Retention Tax Credit
Encourage post-secondary graduates—domestic students from across the country and international students who follow the permanent residency path—to remain and work in Atlantic Canada for at least three years, addressing regional retention challenges and workforce shortages. - Atlantic PSE Marketing and Recruitment Partnership
Position Atlantic Canada as a premier destination for both domestic and international students through coordinated marketing. - K–12 Industry Integration and Skills Elevation
Build long-term talent pipelines by embedding industry-relevant skills and mentorship into K–12 education. - International Credential Recognition Supports
Reduce barriers to employment for international students and skilled immigrants by improving credential recognition. - Experiential Learning for Students
Enhance retention by connecting domestic and international students to local employers through meaningful work experiences. - Immigration System Reform: Addressing “Brain Waste”
Ensure immigrants’ skills are fully utilized in Atlantic labour markets, reducing overeducation and underemployment.
