Welcome to Fredericton, the capital city of New Brunswick! Established in 1785, Fredericton has a rich and diverse history which has created a unique culture that is welcoming to newcomers. Situated on the Saint John River, Fredericton is a beautiful Maritime city with breath-taking sights, a growing economy and population, and clean air and drinking water. Fredericton is also proudly bilingual, with English and French as its two official languages. As the 'Startup Capital of Atlantic Canada', it is a perfect location to start and grow a business.


Fredericton is located on the East Coast of Canada, which means it generally experiences more extreme temperatures. Summer tends to average temperatures between 4°C and 24°C. Winter tends of have temperatures of -10°C to -1°C, and over 1cm of snow depth around 105 days in a year. Even with the cooler winter, Fredericton has around 2,000 hours of sunshine per year.

Fredericton's municipal government comprises an elected mayor and 12 City Council members, who represent the 12 wards of Fredericton. Our current mayor, Mike O’Brien, works out of the historic Fredericton City Hall. Since being elected in May 2016, O’Brien has worked hard with both the City of Fredericton and the Province of New Brunswick to ensure that new opportunities for citizens and newcomers are always available.

As the provincial capital, Fredericton’s economy has a robust public sector, while the city’s IT and commercial sector have been showing major growth over the past few years. In addition to its growing industries, Fredericton has the highest average family income levels in New Brunswick and the longest average job tenure (9.4 years) in Canada!


Fredericton boasts prominent institutions such as the University of New Brunswick, St. Thomas University, the New Brunswick Community College, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, the Maritime College of Forest Technology, and many more. It’s no wonder we’re the fourth most university-educated city in Canada!
