Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Issues Statement on Potential Air Canada Flight Attendant Strike

The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is expressing serious concern to the Government of Canada regarding the unresolved negotiations between Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents the airline’s flight attendants.
A possible strike threatens to undermine critical national infrastructure at a pivotal moment for the Canadian economy. While respectful of the rights of workers to pursue fair compensation and working conditions, the chamber urges all parties to move urgently toward an equitable resolution that avoids disruption.
The chamber respects the rights of unions and skilled professionals to achieve meaningful compensation and recognizes flight attendants as vital professionals in Canada’s air travel sector—ensuring safety, service, and the smooth functioning of a travel experience essential for modern business, health access, and family connectivity. However, the wider implications of a service suspension must also be weighed in the current economic and geo-political climate.
Canada today faces rising global trade pressures, shifting supply chain dynamics, and an urgent need for internal harmonization. Regions like Fredericton, and cities across our nation, are strategic contributors to our national resilience. Our interprovincial connections and infrastructure have never been more critical to supporting shared prosperity and economic security.
The Fredericton International Airport (YFC) serves as a regional hub for commerce, tourism, education, health care, and immigration services. Any disruption to this essential link jeopardizes not only Fredericton’s local economy but our collective progress as a country.
This is not the time for fragmentation but the time for unity built through consistent and trusted connections. With meaningful offers reportedly tabled and key issues to address identified, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce calls on the parties to commit their efforts to reach a resolution. In the absence of a negotiated agreement, the government should be ready to avoid disruption and to reinforce the cohesive functioning of our national economy.
A truly Canadian solution, one rooted in dialogue, and respect for both workers and business, and the communities they serve within our strong national economy, is the only viable path forward.
