(Fredericton, NB) – The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is hosting a welcome reception for the city’s 14 medical residents on 25 July 2013 at the Delta Fredericton.

Established in 2008, the chamber’s Physician Recruitment Committee works with partners and stakeholders to provide support and information to prospective physicians for the greater Fredericton area. The committee also meets regularly with officials from the Department of Health, Horizon Health, and the New Brunswick Medical Society to exchange information and ideas for how to best target the group’s efforts.

“Access to primary healthcare has been at or near the top of chamber members’ priorities for several years,” stated Janice Corey, chamber past president and co-chair of the 2013-14 committee. “This is for both personal and business reasons. Our members consistently tell us that getting a family physician is a major concern for prospective employees moving to the area as well as for attracting new investment or businesses to the city.”

In the chamber’s 2012 annual membership survey, 67.5% of respondents placed “Access to a family physician” amongst their top five “most significant issues currently impacting your business and our community.” These findings were consistent across various industries and size of businesses.

“The goal of hosting this reception is to let Fredericton’s medical residents know that the business community wants them stay here, that through our 900 plus members we can provide support to make their transition to practicing and living in the city easier, and that Fredericton is a great place to live, work and raise a family,” said Krista Ross, CEO of the Fredericton chamber. “As the residents will see, starting with the Delta Fredericton, we have had a tremendous response from our membership for this event in terms of donations for gifts, door prizes and sponsorships. In short, our members have stepped up and ‘put their money where their mouth is’.”

The reception takes place at the Delta Fredericton at 6:30 on Thursday, 25 July 2013. Guests will be treated to wine and food pairings, with information being provided by local sommelier and member of the chamber board of directors, Doug Williams, co-owner of the Garrison District Alehouse.

With more than 900 members, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is one of Atlantic Canada’s largest chambers of commerce. A dynamic business organization, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is actively engaged in policy development that affects the competitiveness of our members and of the Canadian business environment.
