Each of these individuals exhibit the true meaning of being a Distinguished Citizen and for that we are thankful for their service in making Fredericton a better place to live, work and play.”
Dr. John McLaughlin
Receiving the Order of New Brunswick in the fall of 2009 for his dedication to post-secondary education, Dr. McLaughlin has strived to bring awareness about how important education is to our community. Being the 17th President and Vice Chancellor for the University of New Brunswick, Dr. McLaughlin has spent his career both professionally and academically focusing on the North American Geomatics industry.
Don Good
Don Good, Senior Transportation Planning Engineer for ADI is a widely admired and respected traffic engineer. Don has increased safety in the Fredericton area whether it is through intersections, streets or walkways; he has shown professionalism regardless of the often controversial nature of the projects. Don is involved in the community as well; he takes his community involvement very seriously, through the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists for New Brunswick. Both of these organizations have put him in the position of Board Member as well President. Don’s community involvement doesn’t end there; whether it is with Science East, The Canadian Institute for the Blind, the United Way and the Labatt Relay, Don’s leadership has always shone through.
Danny Grant
With a junior career with the Peterborough Petes, Danny joined the Montreal Canadian for 23 games in 1967-68, helping them win the Stanley Cup that year. With the Detroit Red Wings Danny was only the 12th player in NHL history to score 50 goals. Danny retired from hockey in 1979 while he was playing with the Los Angeles Kings. With the love of the game always near, Danny came back to Fredericton to give something back to the community that had given him so much. He was influential in bringing the Fredericton Express to town as well as leading the Fredericton Capitals to the Hardy Cup Final. He coached both the UNB Varsity Reds and St. Thomas Tommies. Danny has organized multiple teams/events from the Moosehead Golden Oldies hockey, Fredericton wheelchair basketball team and is co-operated the Danny Grant/Buster Harvey Hockey School for helping underprivileged kids. The City of Fredericton has collectively approved the naming of the soon to be Southside sports and leisure complex to the Grant/Harvey Centre. Danny Grant has served our city as well as our youth as a role model and will continue to do so for many years to come.
Les Hull
A teacher for almost 20 years, Les Hull with a full course load always took on coaching from Basketball, Track and Field, Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball and Softball. Les’s involvement in sports and recreation would be difficult to equal as they are so diverse. He would coach before classes, at lunch, after school and on weekends. Les had coached up to 3 teams per season keeping him extremely busy. Les was a member of the Provincial Government and Mayor of the City of Fredericton for years and he certainly left his mark on the Province as well as the City. Les has been actively involved with the New Brunswick Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. He has received the Outstanding Service award for the Special Olympics. Today, Les volunteers his time teaching for the Fredericton Area Hunter Safety Instructors Association and is a Life Member of the Miramichi Salmon Association. Les is still an avid sports fan and has worked closely with Richard Tingley to keep the Final 12 Basketball Championships at the Aitken Centre. Les has always given back to Fredericton and the surrounding area whether it is through the political aspect or his volunteer work with sports programs, Les is very much a Distinguished Citizen.
“This is one of my favorite events of the year that the Chamber organizes and hosts. It is an opportunity to say thank you to individuals that have given so much to our community. Each of these recipients has made Fredericton a better place. I look forward to the night of March 25th when we can officially thank them for their contribution. I hope that our many friends and co-workers will join me in congratulating this years’ recipients that are so rightfully deserving!”
